he United States military was formed to defend the sovereign territory of the country. They are sworn to protect their nation against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. Little do some people know that the US military is also responsible for some of the most significant contributions to the business sector that would benefit not only the American entrepreneurs but all businesses around the world.
The contributions of the military to the business sector stem from weapons research and development. The military continuously conducts research and development in order to find better means to defend the nation and better solutions to combat potential threats to the safety and security of the country. They spend huge amounts of money for the sake of technological advancement in military technology and a lot of these technological advancements eventually crossed over to the civilian sector as certain enterprising individuals realized that there were viable civilian applications for their technology.
Take a look at computers. Nowadays they come in different shapes and sizes from huge database systems for information management to pocket size personal computers. The predecessor of the modern day computer was developed for the military in 1944. The Harvard Mark-I was conceived by a Harvard professor, designed and developed by IBM and it was a room sized computer and its purpose was to compute missile trajectories. From that point it didn’t take long for the technology to cross over to the civilian sector. By the 70’s desktop computers have become available to the general public. The cellular communications technology was also first developed for military use. Now virtually everyone has a cell phone and can be reached any time and anywhere. The military was also the foster father of air transport. After the Wright brothers proved the possibility of controlled flight; the military saw the potential and was the first to develop airplanes for war which eventually led to civilian air transport. Fly by wire technology developed for fighter jets are now in use in civilian aircraft too. One of the greatest contributions of the military to the civilian sector which greatly benefited businesses the world over is the World Wide Web. Originally designed and developed to interconnect different military branches, the World Wide Web made the idea of globalization a reality.
The military industry is one of the biggest spenders for research and development; they are one of the leaders in technological research and development, technology that was primarily conceived for military applications first and foremost. Almost everyday we benefit from technologies that stemmed from military research and development. From communications, transportation, production line automation to information management systems; they all benefited from military technology. Technology that ultimately changed the way business is done around the world; technology that allowed businesses to reach halfway around the globe with the click of a button and enabled businesses to form effective partnerships and be truly interconnected with each other. Without the military’s technological contributions the business sector wouldn’t be what it is today and the idea of globalization would still be just an idea.
